Mining Corporations in their business strategies as an effective tool for benchmarking global
competitiveness.
The most significant initiative of globalisation as adopted by leading Mining Companies is the drive to
reduce per capita costs on OPEX. This strategy has delivered notable Shareholder and Investor value
add in recent years, however it has also rendered a lot of jobs obsolete, especially in third world
economies like Africa. This strategy is thus in conflict with economic development needs of African
countries and governments which are important stakeholders in the mining industry.
Our strategy at Wattpower Minerals is focused on addressing this opportunity gap in the mining
industry by formulating a solution that will satisfy the two opposing business needs. We are mindful
of the fact that Africa possess the most under skilled human capital in the world, and as such a business
model of a lean and skilled work force will not necessarily deliver the most cost effective output for a
mining business in African, despite evidence that support efficiency of this model in first world
economies.
Our approach aims at simply delivering lowest operating costs per ton of ROM treated or ounce of
product produced, irrespective of workforce head count, through these initiatives:-
- Fit for Purpose organisational structure that provides adequate resources for core and productiondirect activities.
- Lean Overheads Structure that is production and operation focused.
- Zero Cost Based budgeting systems for expenditure on engineering maintenance and production
consumables.
- Decentralised Non-Core Support Services with a streamlined budget just enough to support core
business functions.
Decision making and problem solving are often not defined in large corporations, and it our view that
these are two of the most significant sources of waste on limited resources, especially in large
bureaucratic organisations which are susceptible to opinionated decision making strategies by middle
and senior management, without due regard to facts.
